Want to Be Happier? Buy Yourself Some Time!

Updated: 12/11/2019

They say that money can’t buy happiness. Wrong! Based on a number of groundbreaking researches that have been done recently, we have to disagree with this old adage. The truth is, you can buy yourself happiness, but not by getting more stuff, rather buying yourself some precious time. In this blog post, we’re going to share the surprising results of the aforementioned studies and give you a few tips on what you can do for yourself today to be happier! And yes, one of the tips is to hire a cleaning company. But please, read on for more.

The Experiment

60 adults from British Columbia participated in this experiment that took place over a period of two weekends. Each weekend, the participants were given $40 and were asked to spend it in a certain way. The first weekend, they had to spend it so they would give themselves more free time and on the second weekend, they had to buy material things.

The Results

At the end of each weekend, participants were given a survey to find out their levels of positive and negative emotions that they were experiencing following their purchases. As they had suspected, the weekend during which people bought themselves more time provided more happiness and positive emotions to the participants compared to the weekend where material things were bought.

The Other Study

Another study done by the same researchers helped to expand on this study by putting concrete numbers to it. In this study, researchers surveyed 6,000 people with various incomes and asked them how they spend their money (buying time or buying things) and about their overall satisfaction with life. Those who spent more money on buying time ended up being an average of 10% more satisfied with life.

What Does it All Mean?

Basically, it means that if you want to be happier and more satisfied with your life, instead of spending your money on buying more stuff, you’ll be better off by buying yourself some well deserved time. Time that you can spend doing your favorite activities, sports, playing with your kids, doing gardening etc. that you’d normally have to skip due to your busy schedule. And while being 10% happier with your life doesn’t sound like much, it’s actually a huge difference when you consider how difficult it is to make small changes that have such an impact on your life.

How to Buy Time

Simple. Buying time means you spend your money not on things, but on services that can free you up. You pay other people to do things that you normally do yourself, which, in turn allows you to have more time doing the things that you love. Some people in the study chose to have meals delivered so they didn’t have to cook while others got help with errands.
